During the final week of June, Falmouth Bay will host a five-day regatta with some of the greatest yachts ever to sail UK waters. For any sailing enthusiasts this event is a must, with the 2015 regatta having at least 3 J Class yachts taking part – Lionheart, Ranger and Velsheda. Falmouth Bay is the perfect location for these breathtaking boats to race, with deep waters, challenging courses and super racing, all under the JCA handicap rules.
Hosted by RCYC Events, the operating company of the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club, the J Class has its roots in the oldest sporting race in the world, The America’s Cup. The Royal Cornwall Yacht Club is situated overlooking Falmouth harbour on its own 17th century private quayside. It boasts incredible views across the water to St Mawes, the Roseland Peninsula and Flushing. The regatta opens on Monday the 22nd of June, with racing commencing on the 23rd and finishing on the 27th of June. The yachts are expected to arrive a few days earlier, around the 20th of June and will mostly be moored at Pendennis Marina. Ideal vantage points to view the racing are Pendennis Point, Falmouth’s long beaches and headlands. If you want to get a little closer to the action, J Class has an arrangement with Solent Rib Charter, who is providing either complete boats for hire, or places on high-speed ribs.
Finally if you are in are wanting to soak in the atmosphere of Falmouth town, members of the public will be able to see the fleet and follow details of the racing at the Race Village in Event Square, where the prize giving will eventually take place.
More information on the event can be found at J Class Yachts or you can download a PDF of spectator information from the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club.
