Naturally with a town that’s steeped in a rich maritime history, Falmouth boasts a selection of picture-postcard beaches.

Merchants Manor is an ideal base in which to explore the town’s main beaches. Here’s our insiders’ summary of where to head…

Just seven minutes away, and the closest to the manor, is Gyllyngvase Beach. It features an arc of golden sand and is perfect for families. It has an array of amenities and an award-winning café. It’s also an ideal viewpoint to watch from afar the large ships entering and leaving Falmouth harbour, the world’s third largest deepest natural harbour.

Swanpool Beach

A half-mile, 10 minute coastal path walk from Gyllyngvase Beach will lead you to Swanpool Beach, which is home to some of the best watersports facilities in the town. Here you can try your hand at kayaking, sailing or even windsurfing. There’s the option for tuition or hire. The carpark is adjoined to mini-golf which is perfect for all ages. The beach also adjoins Swanpool Lake Nature Reserve, a Site of Special Scientifc Interest (SSSI), making it an ideal spot for nature enthusiasts.

Castle Beach

Along the Pendennis Point, and the most northerly of all Falmouth’s beaches, is Castle Beach. Its rocky areas at low tide make it a favourite with young explorers and those wishing to do a spot of rockpooling. It’s not all rocks though and its sandy edge makes it an excellent dive point for snorkelling and getting up close with the local marine life. It also boasts a small café and at low tide the nibble footed can climb the rocks to neighbouring Gyllyngvase.

Maenporth Beach

For those looking to stretch their legs a bit further, Maenporth Beach lies just over two miles from Merchants Manor. It’s accessible via road or there’s the scenic route: the picturesque South West Coast Path runs all the way along from Swanpool Beach. For the more adventurous, the coast path continues onwards to the Helford River area.
